This new online course series cracks open the lives, methods, and secrets of legendary painters, one at a time. Each class includes slideshows packed with images, rich historical context, instructional videos, and lesson recommendations to guide your own painting practice. 

Henri Matisse believed that art should be like “a good armchair,” a place of rest and joy. In this online course, students will explore the life and revolutionary vision of one of the 20th century's greatest artists. You will learn to paint with bold, expressive color; study different approaches to composition; see the importance of line, and look at how to reduce a form to it’s simplest elements by creating vibrant paper collages in Matisse's iconic late-career style.

No prior art experience is required, only curiosity, a willingness to play, and the desire to see the world a little differently. Each lesson blends art history, critical looking, and hands-on studio practice so that you leave not just with skills, but with a genuinely deeper understanding of why Matisse still matters.

Students are free to work at their own pace. All video content is pre-recorded so that you have access to it at any hour.
