Have you wanted to know how to abstract your figures?  Be inspired by new approaches to your work?  Have a window in to how abstract figurative artists are working today?  Based on her popular eCourse of the same name, this PlayShop will focus on six different Approaches to abstracting figurative work.

  1. Abstraction Within The Form
  2. Flattening
  3. Pattern and Collage
  4. Exaggeration • Distortion
  5. Cropping
  6. Fractured • Deconstructed

Students will  be presented with a bit of history and inspiring images of artists who currently work with these methods. Participants will then be encouraged to choose which Approaches they would like to use in their own work.

This is your chance to work with Melinda in person where she will guide each student individually helping them integrate these Approaches into their own painting process.

This will be the same general course outline as the PlayShop offered in Menlo Park in June.

Painting with
Metaphor & Narrative

Taught by
Karen Kaapcke

IN MENLO PARK, CA

JUNE 9, 10, 11, 2017
10 am to 3pm
Location: Menlo Park, California
Workshop Fee $550

Karen Kaapcke is coming to California!! Included in Poets and Artist's "50 Memorable Painters of 2015" and "100 Great Drawings, 2017" this New York native has exhibited extensively, in both galleries and museums. She has taught at Parson's School of Design, The Crosby Street Painting Studio, and is founder and director of the Young Urban Artists for teens in NYC.  But we have her for three days!

This exciting three-day workshop will focus our creative attention on building an oil (or mixed media) painting at the intersection of skill, memory, present/current surroundings and imagination.
Starting with oil, charcoal or pencil, we will begin by populating the painting surface with ideas that arise - without any judgement, aesthetic or otherwise. With each mark made, we will then begin to ask questions, to listen to the possible story, and to make aesthetic decisions at the same time.

Karen will guide each student in using figure drawing and painting skills to integrate memory, self-reference and immediate surroundings into their work. A large part of the workshop will focus on how to listen to and use our visual ideation that is often very much in the background and too frequently judged or dismissed as being not worthy.

This way of working calls on all and various of our skills, and it promises to be quite exciting both to produce and to witness.
