Often, very small changes can make BIG improvements.

ORIGINAL STUDENT WORK artist: Gabi Hirth

Gabi, great figure and the composition is basically working. With a bit more color intensity we can really get a nice sense of sunlight on this figure and surroundings. Here I simply increase the color intensity in some areas to really bring out the light and shadow. I also define just a few more edges to help guide our eye around the canvas.

ORIGINAL STUDENT WORK artist: Carol Bucknell

I like these overlapping figures Carol. I would separate their legs which is easy cuz I actually think blue lady’s’ legs are in a different spot. I would also give more interest to their dresses. maybe some stripes or some kind of pattern and possibly more colors

ORIGINAL STUDENT WORK artist: Kathi Scarminach

Hi Kathi, I like this painting! I like how you divided the shapes and your composition. Nice work here! The monochromatic color scheme is working well. I think you could bring a bit more blue variations into it as I show below. I also like the idea of flattening her top left into that back wall. See what you think. Very intriguing work. Keep those wonky lines Kathi! They make the painting!

Melinda’s “RE-MARKS” Using Procreate

And when the painting is working well, find out WHY…

ORIGINAL STUDENT WORK artist: Elise Erasmus

Nice work here Elise. Love the color palette. I also like the way the blue runs through the painting background, pants, and foreground. This is tying the dark values together and creating a nice balance and eye movement. You more or less centered the figure which can be challenging compositionally but you have pulled it off by that red to create some nice asymmetry as well as the values I mentioned above. Lots of great paint interest in the surrounding areas as well. Well done!

ORIGINAL STUDENT WORK artist: Lynn Harris Morgan

Very well done Lynn! Her legs looks fine to me in the photo (could be different color in person). Your composition is working because of the light vertical line work to the right that is balancing the heavy dark on the left. It is just barely balancing it, however it is working. Partially because of it just barely working, it creates a good tension between the left and right sides of the painting. Great figure too—frame it!
